Melanie Pullen is a huge name that is going to be giving us a personalized tour of her show at the Ace Gallery on Nov.7th @3pm. Amazing opportunity to pry into her brain. We have a carpool list, contact Becca at photoclub007@gmail.com and title it with "Becca's rockin Carpool" Warning only members may join, so if you have not paid dues, you can give them to Becca on that day.

The student sale: Set up on the 5th, Dec 6th, pre sale with art donors (eliete benefactors who help support our community by buying up and coming art work and donating galliers), Dec 7-11 is the sale for the rest of us.
Fine Print... The ceramics club takes 15% for doing all the work, and getting everyone there. Your work must be legit - no $1 trashed assignments - people have made thousands of dollars selling their work at this thing. That doesn't mean you have to have framed stuff selling for 100 bucks, it just means it has to be presentable. If you have work in the show, you must spend some time sitting the gallery. You must be a member of the photo club to be in it.

The winter trip destination has been decided: Vegas. Awesome.

Portfolio Review, Review

Just to recap some of the information given last night during the review:

FYI: There are no extra classes that are opened up/needed after you get into the BFA. (except the sr. show)

You can always fill out an application that says you are interested in submitting for the portfolio, but you can ONLY SUBMIT TWICE. if you think you might, then put in an application. but only submit a portfolio if you have a chance. Here are 4 aspects that will help you determine that...

The 4 main factors to consider when applying:

Technical/condition - The profs want to know that you can produce images correctly (no dust all over the place, no blocked out edges, ect), and to transport them without destroying them. Small technical errors can be overlooked, but only on a strong portfolio. Portfolio holders can be simple or complex, depending on the theme of the portfolio itself. A Portfolio box is a great, simple way of doing it. some people choose a container that went with the theme (i.e. an office briefcase to hold images about office spaces). consider providing cotton gloves in the portfolio if you don't want their fingerprints on your prints.

Concept - Fine art concept is about saying something. It doesn't have to be a grand statement, but they need to know that you can put your concept into a tangible form. Think of your art as a language - most single pieces or assignments are the building blocks/words of your ideas. The Profs want to see that you can put all your words together (a body of work) to form a legitimate sentence, to express that particular idea.

Person - Allow the professors to know you. Show them your work and ask of them their opinion. If they see that you are working, and trying to improve, they'll add that to their decision. If they have never heard of you, and your work doesn't come out crystal clear in their eyes, it will hurt you a lot.
WARNING: each professor will tell you something different. just like anything else in life, consider your options, weigh them with your own opinions and act accordingly. You do NOT have to do what they tell you, but they are an amazing source for ideas that, if they don't provide feedback that you agree with, can at least spur your own ideas or mutations on your work.

Artist Statement - Most people don't realize how important this part is to a portfolio and a show. It's you, explaining your work or yourself (not necessarily litteraly) when you can't be there. This is also known as one of the hardest parts of art, and I am not the one to explain it to you. Ask the professors for help and that way they can point you the right direction while getting to know you.

Schooled in Song - Free Benefit Concert for Music Programs in LB Schools
Sunday, October 5th - 10am - 10pm

You may remember last year when we presented Schooled in Song at the Carpenter Center. It was an evening of fantastic music created by a veritable who's who of Long Beach musicians and the proceeds went to funding after-school music programing. Well, this year the Schooled in Song gang has joined forces with the folks who put on University by the Sea for a full day of art, education, lectures, and killer live music. Due to a few generous donors the event is free, fun for the whole family and, once again, it's on track to raise some much needed funding for school music programming and scholarships for area songwriters and musicians.
The live music is coming courtesy of Grand Ole Party, Dengue Fever, Crystal Antlers, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, Pawn Shop Kings, The New Fidelity, Molly Jensen, Blank Blue, Brett Bixby, Shave, The Year Zero, Chris Hanlin, Jay Buchanan (who was incredible last night), forcefieldon, Deccatree, Jameson, Leldon, Greater California, Loie Fuller, Marliese, CPO, One F, George Fryer Combo, and others still to be announced. It's a pretty great line-up for a free event, so put a big circle around October 5th and plan on spending at least part of the day at the corner of First St & Linden in Downtown Long Beach.

Career Exploration Workshops

One of keys to your art school education is finding a good fit for you in the industry of Fine Arts. You have an idea of what you want to do, now, how to make a career of it that would suit you and your personallized interests?
With this question in mind, a special set of workshops have been pulled together with you in mind.
The Career Exploration Workshops are designed to help students find careers that could be a good fit for them. Each workshop uses a different career assessment. Students may attend any one workshop or all four in any sequence. (Attending all four will enable students to complete assessments of their interests, personality, values, and skills, as well as an orientation to online tools and the Career Resource Library for their use in exploring careers. Attending just one workshop will address one of these aspects of career exploration.)

All workshops are offered free of charge to CSULB students, but they must reserve a space in advance. Instructions to RSVP and complete the online assessments prior to the workshop are included in the attached flyer.

She is a frequent performer of experimental music in the Los Angeles area, both as a Cal Arts Composition MFA student and as a member of pop label Human Ear Music.

We kicked it off with a good turn out and a lot of new faces, though I don't think we plan on holding it again around that time due to class scheduling interference. Pizza was present while we explained some of the advantages of being within this organization. The main reason: we're AWESOME! and you want to be networked with awesome people that will help you out with opinions, opportunities, jobs, work, parties, school and laughs.

This free, special two-evening installation complements the exhibition California Video and is curated by Anne Bray, Director of Freewaves, a Los Angeles-based arts organization connecting new media from around the world. rawn to the photo-realist movement of the seventies and inspired by the original photo realist Caravaggio, Melissa Sims uses her background and degree in photography to record images for her paintings. When photography alone was no longer satisfying her creative drive it brought her to the dynamic arena of painting where she began layering oil and acrylic with resin, building up a depth and sheen that aligns poetically with her images. Sims paints on 2" deep wood panel boxes wrapping the painting around the edge giving even greater depth to her images

On May 8, 2007 a major wildfire broke out in Griffith Park and, over the course of that afternoon and evening, spread rapidly. Before containment, the fire consumed over 800 acres of the 4,200-acre park. Just days after the fire, photographer Colin Remas Brown documented its effects. Where he expected to find only scorched trees and hills, he discovered instead an apocalyptic nightmare and the true victims of the blaze: the native wild life.

cannon at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier is where the group meets, they'll disperse to random areas from there.

this group is being coordinated through a world wide organization. Need a story? writing an article? want to be apart of something else besides school?

either way, they're looking for exposure so it's a good way to get your name on something that'll be widely dispersed.

2nd Satuday Art Walk Opportunity

we have been invited to participate in the 2nd Satuday Art Walk, every month in downtown Long Beach. There is an unused section of street that is blocked off between 1st and Broadway on Linden Ave. we can use this area to display work, fund raise, set up a group photo shoot, our own photo booth or whatever our creative minds desire.

On Friday night, its ART NIGHT! in Pasadena - all the museums and galleries are open late and everything is FREE. The do this twice a year (Spring and Fall), and its usually a very fun night.

Pasadena "projections on lake" call for entries

As you know you were just featured in "projections on lake". I will be putting together another screening in May. I'd like to open up a call for video submissions. Key things are that it must work with no audio, must be PG rated, and it exists in an outdoor setting in a shopping area of Pasadena.
